Export a WhatsApp chat to PDF, with Hebrew that reads right
WhatsApp does not export to PDF. It exports a text file, and what happens to that file decides whether the Hebrew survives.
WhatsApp cannot save a chat as a PDF. Its "Export chat" option produces a .txt file, or a .zip that holds the .txt plus the photos, voice notes and documents. To get a PDF, that file has to be laid out page by page. Most converters are built for English and lose right-to-left order in Hebrew and Arabic. Nispach reads the export in your browser and produces a PDF with right-aligned bubbles, mixed Hebrew and English lines in the correct order, dates and senders on every message, and media shown as thumbnails or listed in an index.
What is inside a WhatsApp export
Open the .txt and you will see one line per message: a date and time, the sender's name as saved on the exporting phone, and the text. The exact format depends on the phone: iPhone wraps the date in square brackets, Android does not, and both follow the phone's date settings (day first or month first, 24-hour or AM/PM). Media appear as lines such as <attached: 00000012-PHOTO-2026-03-04.jpg> or "<Media omitted>". A good converter has to read all of these variants correctly, or messages end up on the wrong date.
Why Hebrew breaks in English tools
Text in a chat is stored in logical order, the order it was typed. Displaying Hebrew correctly means applying the Unicode bidirectional algorithm, aligning each message to the right, and keeping runs of English, phone numbers, times and amounts in their own left-to-right order inside the Hebrew sentence. A tool built for English skips this. The typical results: punctuation at the wrong end of the line, a phone number reversed, an amount like ₪1,250 split from its context, and bubbles on the wrong side of the page.
Turning the export into a PDF
- Drop the .zip or .txt into Nispach.
- Check that the participants and dates were read correctly; the preview shows the first pages immediately.
- Filter by date range and sender if you need only part of the chat.
- Choose whether media appear as thumbnails, in an index, or not at all.
- Download the PDF, with page numbers and, if you want, an appendix label and cover page.
With or without media
An export with media is larger and slower to send from the phone, but the PDF can then show photos in place and list every voice note and video with its time. An export without media keeps a placeholder line for each item, which still shows that something was sent and when. For court use, keeping the media is usually the safer choice; for a quick reading copy, text alone is enough.
